 Chapter One: Diagnosis

To be able to receive a kidney, I had to be in perfect health. This meant catching up on dental visits, as well as a thorough pre-transplant work-up.

I ventured to Chicago for the work-up at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on October 22, 1999. I had an extremely busy day at the hospital. I met with doctors, had a physical and underwent several tests.

Here, Dr. Lorenzo Gallon, a nephrologist, gives me a complete physical and medical history. This is to ensure there are no other medical problems that would need addressing before the surgery. Ultimately, my donor would have to go through a similar procedure.
