 Chapter One: Diagnosis

An electrocardiogram (EKG) was the final test I had to undergo at Northwestern. The test is performed by placing several electrodes around the heart, arms and legs and is designed to measure the electric currents that the heart uses to stimulate its muscles during every beat.

An EKG of a healthy person makes a certain pattern. Heart damage or disease changes the pattern in different ways. As with the echocardiogram, there was no pain and the test only lasted a minute.
